Popularity of “Lavender” Phrases in Google Searches
It is very interesting to see the upward spiking trends when people search for “lavender” phrases on Google from 2004 to present. Most noticeably, the trend starts increasing in the mid 2010’s:
It’s a color, an oil, a festival, a song, a flowering herb, food, phones and cups!
I could not resist the urge to dive in to see what may have caused sudden popularity surges, over the recent decade, that prompted people to search for lavender information by year! Here is the breakdown of Lavender web searches by year:
Lavender Popularity Timeline – Google Trends 2014-2024
2015: Lavender Blue, Dilly Dilly
"Lavender's Blue," a 17th Century nursery rhyme, was revived in Disney's Cinderella 2015 movie. This catchy tune captured the #7, 9, 10 most search lavender trends.
2016: Lavender Festivals
Lavender festivals were all the rage capturing two of the top ten spots in 2016. Bonus points for "Lavender Festival Michigan" for capturing #5 in lavender searches!
2018: Pet Lavender Oil Safety
Pet lavender oil safety became the hot lavender topic of the year. Crushing it in 2018's 6 of the top 25 lavender searches at #11,12,13,15,19 and 22!
2019: The Lavender iPhone
The lavender iPhone was released, yes, I couldn't resist. It was the year we started our lavender farm so I just had to have one! #1 searched lavender phrase of 2019!
2020: The Pandemic
THE Pandemic aka the year that people took up plants and gardening. Any topic that was related to lavender plants: growing from seed, harvesting, care, plants for sale, etc absolutely took over the top 25 lavender searches on Google. Lavender plant related searches claimed spots #3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 24, 25 in the year of the pandemic!
2022: Lavender Haze
A song about keeping new love out of the public eye by popular artist Taylor Swift and took over every single search, (as in 1,2,3,4,5,) in the top 5 lavender searches.
2023: Lavender Stanley Cup
Lavender Haze managed to keep a couple of lavender search phrases in the top 25. We shouldn't be surprised that the "Lavender Stanley Cup" took top searches #9, 10 & 11.
2024: Starbucks Lavender Drinks
Culinary lavender has been rising in popularity and Starbucks releasing their lavender drinks has created a surge in lavender related coffee searches in the first quarter 2024. Between Jan 1-April 3, 2024 Starbucks Lavender drinks own the top 25 searches at #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13,14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. I should have just noted what searches were NOT monopolized by Starbucks drinks, haha!
