When Does Lavender Bloom on a Michigan Lavender Farm
This is a question we often asked at events! The “lavender season” in Michigan lasts about 6 weeks on our farm. Some Michigan lavender farms have “double blooming” lavender plants. Our lavender farm does not have lavender cultivars that are known to have a double bloom.
Factors that Impact Lavender Bloom on Michigan Lavender Farms
The answer to the question of when lavender will actually bloom in Michigan depends on many factors and most of the factors will be the lavender farm’s location in the state of Michigan.
The Microclimate and Growing Lavender in Michigan
Michigan has a “microclimate” that is different from the 48 lower states. The proximity of a Michigan lavender farm to any great lake, latitude, weather, lavender cultivars grown, etc will produce varied lavender bloom times and cycles all across the state. In short, it is best to contact or visit the social media of the specific lavender farm you wish to visit to get your best answer.
Here is the “what time of the year does lavender bloom in Michigan” answer for our farm:
Our angustifolias (Engish Lavender) bloom first.
Munstead starts budding around Memorial day. The bloom is about 1-2 weeks after buds appear. Munstead lavender is known to flush (send up more buds and blooms) until the rest of the angustifolias finish their bloom cycles.
Vera is the next to start budding, about 1 week after Memorial Day. The Vera lavender blooms follow the same cycle as the Munstead lavender blooms: 1 to 2 weeks after after you see the buds.
Hidcote Blue lavender buds start appearing around the time Vera buds appear but Hidcote loves to take its sweet time producing it’s gorgeous dark purple blossoms. The Hidcote blooms appear around 4th of July.
Once our English lavender blooms are exhausted, our Intermedia or Hybrid Lavender buds appear. This is around 4th of July and it takes 2-3 weeks to see the Intermedia blossoms.
We concentrate our growing focus on angustifolias due to their high therapeutic and culinary value so we have very few (only around 200) Intermedia. Here is a blog post on the difference between Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula x intermedia.
Our farmstand is open year round but if you want to see those Michigan lavender blooms on a farm, you will definitely stop by our farm between Memorial day and 4th of July! Click here for our lavender farm hours.
